    New Year, New Resume

I'm counting on 2019 being a great year. I've done consistent work on my own resume and LinkedIn profile and helped others. Are you happy with your resume and LinkedIn profile? If you aren’t sure how to get started, here are a few tips to get you going. If you dread writing about yourself or struggle with how to explain your experience and accomplishments, let me help you. I’d love to and will be able to draw out the best about you, even some things you won't think of! Linked
    Happy National Punctuation Day!

    Happy National Punctuation Day!

I love today! September 24 is National Punctuation Day - every year! How I recommend you celebrate: First, it’s about time you learn how to correctly use the semicolon. Two good resources you can review: Grammarly The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation Second, buy a punctuation book to help guide you. Two of my favorites: “The Best Punctuation Book, Period” by June Casagrande “Grammatically Correct” by Anne Stilman On past National Punctuation Days, I celebrated by purchasi
    Don't "Click here"

    Don't "Click here"

A language peeve of mine is seeing regular use of “Click here” or "here" as link text. Web users today quickly scan pages, and seeing these links won’t tell them what the page is about or where the links will go. Also, a website’s chance with search engines won’t be improved by using “click here.” Better keywords should be used. Years ago I purchased the Yahoo Style Guide when it was available in book form. It gives the best and most simple advice about writing link text: Goo
    First Impressions

    First Impressions

One of my favorite quotes: You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Good writing comes from good editing. As a professional editor, I look for more than spelling and grammar, I serve to be your coach and confidante and help you appear more credible. What does an editor do for you? Copy editors revise content to ensure clarity and accuracy, and they must have a strong grasp of the English language. They are your champion and work on your behalf by checking sp
    Kindred Spirits

    Kindred Spirits

I relocated back to the West Coast recently, and during my transition I had so much going on that I didn’t think about looking for typos, or they didn’t jump out at me as much. However, I did find a few! As usual though, my friends and family were on the lookout during my journey, and here’s a collection of what they sent me! Life "Detuors"

    Life "Detuors"

Two-and-a-half years ago, I wanted a life adventure. I moved to Detroit, got out of my comfort zone, and experienced the four seasons. My adventure took me to places I never could have imagined, including to the other side of Michigan where I lived for two years. I learned so much, especially about myself. And winter was not as bad as I thought it would be! The Midwestern people really are just as nice as everyone said they’d be. I quickly found out they also loved grammar an
    I Love Typos

    I Love Typos

Typos – I love them. They make me laugh mostly, but sometimes I just say OMGOSH! I can’t believe it was missed and made it into print, especially on a professional sign or on a building marquee. There are some funny word mistakes too that have made me laugh, including: My first biggest “oops” was in a mutual fund report, and spellcheck would not have caught it. I missed the word “committed,” which was supposed to be “committee.” At my old gym, a sign in the bathroom said: Soc

    Ampersands, Pizza, and Books!

Last week I was fortunate to be in New York for some journalism leadership training, and no matter where I go my editor hat is always on. When I go out to eat, I can’t help but look for a menu typo before ordering (haha). Found two on this menu. Can you find them? And what a delight to find two awesome places a few blocks from each other: Strand Book Store and &Pizza!! Strand Book Store has more than 2.5 million used, new, and rare books, and an incredible selection of postca
A Missing Comma Cost $5 Million?

A Missing Comma Cost $5 Million?

One of my first and favorite language books that covers punctuation is “Grammatically Correct,” by Anne Stilman. It includes 26 pages of how to use the comma correctly! I have the first edition, but the second edition is available. This book could have come in handy in regard to this story about a missing comma that resulted in a $5 million settlement! Want a copy of the book? If not, you can rely on me to make sure you follow the rules and avoid these kinds of communication
